Matt started in the singles line-up in half of the team's dual matches last season playing in the #4-#6 position. He finished the year with an 11-11 overall record.
He won just one doubles in a dual match, but it proved to be an important one. Filling in for an injured teammate at #3 doubles against Princeton he faced 3 match points while down two breaks 3-7 in the deciding match. On each occasion Matt drilled his return setting up his partner for an easy winner. They fought back to win in a tie-breaker and the team went on to win the match 4-3.
Matt posted a 12-16 singles record and a 4-6 doubles record as a freshman. In singles, he played in the #5 and #6 position. Matt earned ITA Scholar-Athlete honors that year.
Prior to Yale, Matt was ranked among the top 60 nationally in the 18 & under division.
In high school, he was a two-time captain and three-time MVP of the Bolles School, and won three state singles titles and two state doubles titles.
